When you respond to a job opening, trust me, you are not alone. In fact, there are likely hundreds of others pursuing that very job. The good news is that most applicants are not very well prepared and are not diligent in their job hunting.

The bad news, however, is that because of the deluge of interested people, you have between 20 and 45 seconds to make a good impression. After that your application ends up in a short pile or a large pile (that will be suitably filed later). Same thing if you make it to an interview.

This is a full out 3-hour review of what works and what doesn’t. The hiring market has lost more than 3 million positions nationwide in the past year or so. Things don’t look like they’ll be improving anytime soon. To be successful, you’ll need to be prepared for the tough competition you’ll encounter.
